I've been there early in the morning, and the problem isn't the number of travelers, it's the number of agents. There were 7 flights going out and there was 1 screening agent. (the one that checks your ID) She took one person from the VIP line, then one from the TSA pre, and finally one from general boarding. And she clearly hadn't had her coffee yet....she was taking her time and made no effort to speed things up. I was there almost two hours ahead and almost missed my flight. Thankfully other passengers let us go ahead so we made it before the doors closed. If there was more than one person the initial screening area, things would have moved much faster.
