As a contractor and an engineer, I can appreciate certain highly specialized but limited geotechnical applications. One serious disadvantage in typical applications is its very low bulk unit weight which is just a fraction of water. This property can cause significant problems with flotation and makes for a very light-weight structure. It would also be highly susceptible to erosion unless covered with other material. In general, I don't see the product as a serious alternative to standard mineral-based aggregates, even if the price drops significantly.
