This whole situation is sad. It's unfortunate during a time when this new administration is systematically erasing the rights of trans individuals that the owner refused to understand the concerns over transphobia in the name. It's also sad that opponents of the name were equally as stubborn in their ability to overlook the name of the bar or understand the owner's point of view concerning the historical connotation in the name. And what's saddest of all, the lack of enthusiasm and support from a large sector of the LGBT community and what I am sure is a huge headache for the owner over this issue will probably result in an early closing of what would be the only dammed gay bar in this area!!!!

@ConcernedVtr - I hear you loud and clear. A lot of dangerous moves on the part of this man that escalated to his eventual death. Just to reinforce my point - let's hold officers to a higher level of responsibility. Let's have conversations about mental health and stand-off situations.

I appreciate the reply and understand the threat. I can't personally put myself in the officer's shoes because I have never experienced such a situation. It's difficult to measure what personal response I would have, but most assuredly it would be considering those big questions you are asking - facing death, never again seeing family, friends, etc. It would undoubtedly be an emotion-filled decision and lead to a similar response as the deputy sheriff.
As with most of the discussions around police force and gun use in this country right now, this pertains to a larger critique on training and understanding the responses law enforcement have to particular groups of people. Is eight shots to the head the only solution here? If this isn't an emotionally-charged response, but one an officer has been trained to have, can't we have a discussion about developing stand-off tactics that don't end in the death of unarmed people? Hoping more dialogue and solutions can come out of such a tragic event.

The perceived threat here is clear. The response and complete lack of control of firearm use seems absolutely emotionally driven - a moment of fear and panic in a situation where we expect law enforcement to be trained to handle these types of encounters. "...eight shots in two seconds, hitting Beshaw seven times in the head,"
How do we justify this type of response? What type of professional training is this? Are eight shots to the head the best training Franklin County has for armed public servants? What deems this deputy sheriff "ready" to return to work? It doesn't seem like anyone is calling for a refresher on responsible gun use.
We have to hold armed public officials to higher standards than this. On a side note, I guess it's comforting to know that Attorney General Donovan is urging restraint from someone???

Despite some of the other comments, my impression is that Resource made the decision to leave and was not pushed out by Conant. Is that correct? Regardless, with Steve Conant having the power to control who comes into this South End space, and an all white SEABA Board and a white man running SEABA (not an attack, just facts), I hope Conant and other South End business owners also commit to supporting the work of underrepresented artists and business owners. Affordability is just one issue to keeping the South End a place where art flourishes.
