Re: “Curious Destinations That Keep Vermont Weird

Thanks for this. You've solved the mystery.
For a while I've had the suspicion that given its legends, anybody who wanted to get out from under, whether it was debt, or marriage, or legal problems, just went to Glastenbury. It was a very convenient place for people who wanted to disappear. All you had to do was show up, be seen, and then take off.

Re: “Vermont Senate Bill Would Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags

Two false arguments here:

1. "because reusable grocery bags, which are often made of plastic, would eventually end up in the garbage. Because those bags use more plastic than a single-use bag, Rozenski said the ban would actually lead to more plastic waste." No. First of all, we should ban all bags made of plastic, including the supposed non-disposable ones. Second even if we don't, those reusable bags can be used hundreds and even thousands of times before they are disposed of. So divide the amount of plastic in them by a thousand or so.

2. Then there is the clear and present danger of banning plastic straws, because of spills. Isn't it possible to spill a drink with a plastic straw in it? More to the point, there is something called a paper straw, and it works just fine.

3. Examine the motivations behind these arguments. While the conservationists are worried about the environment, it is all too possible that opponents of the ban are worried about--guess what? Profits.

Re: “WTF: Are There Catamounts in Vermont?

You'd have to be nearly blind to confuse a bobcat or a lynx with a cougar. It's absurd to suggest that most of these sightings are really sightings of another animal. The tail of a cougar, for one thing, is an identifying characteristic. No other animal in this area has a tail like that. They are here in Vermont. People I know who have seen them are very knowledgeable and reliable folks.

Re: “Movie Review: Clint Eastwood Unexpectedly Gets on the Avant-Garde Train With 'The 15:17 to Paris'

This is another incisive, persuasive, and very witty review. I have come to trust this reviewer more than I do almost anyone else to tell me whether or not a movie is worth seeing.

Re: “Vermont Teacher Fired for Demonstrating Nazi Salute to Third Graders

What was her intention? It might have been innocent. If that is the case, then her judgment was flawed, but a summary dismissal would be inappropriate. One steady characteristic of Puritans is the tendency to overdo, especially when it comes to punishment.

Re: “Movie Review: Taylor Sheridan Shines as Director of the Superb 'Wind River'

Another fine review. High moment was the metaphor about the Hope Diamond. I won't forget that soon.
I will make a point of seeing this film.
