Re: “Vandana Shiva Talks Poison Cartel, Farmers' Rights and Ecofeminism

It should be possible to have a discussion about sustainable agriculture without constructing straw men and resorting to hyperbole and pejorative. Farmers and those of us that spend our careers supporting them are solving problems while feeding us all.

"......The agricultural systems that produce our food are much refined from the 1950s and 1960s when the conflation of modern farming and cheap, effective, and, yes, often dangerous pesticides combined to rapidly increase food supply and security in the U.S. and worldwide. Fixation on chemicals from 60 years ago blinds us to the incremental progress that has transformed the food supply in that time. Denigrating important tools as poisons ignores the protections that have been developed that have increased pesticide safety to workers by several orders of magnitude while essentially eliminating consumer risk from pesticide residues in our food supply. Our farmers and those of us that support them in their efforts deserve better, and the consumers that rely on the safe and abundant food supply available to them deserve facts, and not fear-based messaging."

Re: “McKenzie Releases New Non-GMO Products

Please, rather than printing a press release, dig into this a bit deeper. What GMO ingredients are there in the regular, non-non-GMO beef? Roast beef, salt, and pepper. None of those are even available as GMO products. There is no reference on their website to their not allowing cows to be fed GM crops, because it's not true (and with the markedly higher cost involved, they would advertise that). So you have a greenwashed product with the Non GMO Project stamp that is no different than the product was before the stamp. By McKenzie supporting this labeling, and by Seven Days publicizing it, you are perpetuating the myth of the dangerous GMO, and further dumbing down the discussion of how we are going to feed ourselves sustainable, fairly, and economically.
Oh and that raw milk cheese? I can all but guarantee that contains GMO rennet, which has been exempted from the GMO=evil meme because of the near total reliance of it for one of our most iconic industries.
I expect better. Please report, don't repeat.
