Re: “Jensen Beach Receives Vermont Book Award

I offer congratulations to Mr. Beach on his win, and I DON'T wish to diminish the well-deserved award. But as I watched his interview on WCAX a couple evenings ago I seemed to remember the hype about the nominees this year and the huge boon that it spoke to about the rise of women authors in the state. Of the eight nominees, seven were women... Guess who won? In the Rutland Herald was this passage on June 17th, 2017: "Of the fact that seven of eight finalists are women, [VCFA President Tom] Greene added: 'That really speaks to the work being done by women writers here in Vermont, and I think thats exciting as well.' ...It doesn't mean that a woman should have necessarily won. I also don't really advocate any type of "affirmative action"-type consideration while adjudicating what constitutes good literature. But I sure do think it's interesting in a time of increased introspection about gender equality and parity, that the only male nominee should take the prize. Looking at the jury panel, it does not seem that it was stacked with men. Psychological bias? During his WCAX interview, Beach was visibly stumped when the question was posed to him, "Why do you think that people liked your book?" He didn't know. Humility? or true shock? I can see that Mr.Beach's book was reviewed in this paper. (May 11, 2016) Were the works of the other nominees provided equal review coverage prior to the award? Just curious...
