In this illustrated lecture, Joan B. Connelly, professor of classics and art history at New York University and author of The Parthenon Enigma (2014), proposes a radically new reading of the Parthenon frieze as depicting a foundation myth—rather than the prevailing interpretation, as depicting an episode in the Panathenaic Procession—and in the process overhauls our understanding of the temple as a whole. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art, Department of History of Art & Architecture, and the Director of the Arts.
