Hi Paul. I wish that you would stop using your considerable journalistic talents (and bully pulpit) to trash Shumlin at every turn. His run is over. Sue Minter is not Shumlin, is not a Shumlin puppet, and not hand-picked by Shumlin. She is a bona fide, visionary public servant with her own ideas and plans, and should be regarded as such. She is an intelligent, strategic, passionate advocate for all the people in Vermont, and ten times more qualified than Phil Scott in every way.
She's not a prevaricator, she's a politician. Which is not a pejorative, just as "liberal" is not a pejorative. Who cares who our gubernatorial candidates supported for president, as long as it's not Trump? The suggestion that they need to have been Bernie supporters all along sounds like a loyalty test to me. Sue minter is a candidate who is direct, clear and authentic about her vision for Vermont. I'm proud to support her and finally optimistic about what lies ahead for those who are struggling.
Dunne campaign--- tut tut. You're going down a road you can't come back from.
It sounds like a witty, provocative and sophisticated exhibit, despite the mild snarkiness of this story, the integrity (and bravery) of the artist comes through. I hope I can see it.
Great piece. Barb Prine made an impassioned speech endorsing TJ and highlighting a few of his remarkable qualities: compassion, loyalty, fierce advocacy for the poor. What is so extraordinary about TJ (just one thing) is that he is broadly recognized for these qualities even though he is a prosecutor. I've never known a more empathetic prosecutor and fellow civil libertarians feel the same way. Onward TJ!
I am stunned, for what seems like the thousandth time, by the ease with which ignorant people throw stones. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, the great forgiver said. What someone did in their teens, ten years ago, is no predictor of what they will do or who they are in the present. Basic neuroscience tells us that the brain don't finish developing in males until they are about 25. Impulsivity and anger are the trademarks of many adolescent boys. And then they grow up. People change, and keep changing. Have these folks never done something rash or wrong? Reading the mob-like comments above absolutely sickens me. Ryan Emerson is a bright, hard-working idealistic, dedicated young man, and the City of Burlington, or any city for that matter, would be very fortunate to have his service and leadership. I am deeply saddened by this turn of events, but respect his decision to withdraw as a noble act that demonstrates his loyalty to the people he sought to represent. I hope with all my heart that he will run for public office again. We need him. He is principled, loyal, and really really smart. How many Vermont politicians would you describe that way?
