Re: “August First Bakery & Café

A great scene without a scene
I like this place because it's a little off the beaten [church/Main] path, and there seems to be a nice mix of people. I love their bread and sandwiches, and their salads are delicious as well. Their pastries miss the mark for me - the scones and "hungarian sweet rolls" are too dry for my pastry taste, and their brownies, while delicious are almost too intense - more like fudge than even a chewy brownie should be(and this from a confirmed brownieholic). It can get busy at lunch, and sometimes the counter staff gets a bit harried (deservedly so), but the overall ambiance is relaxed and spacious and the lunchables are delicious. Re: “In the Trump Era, Does Vermont Need More Abortion Options?

Thanks so much for covering this important issue. Women have the legal right to choose in VT, but finding and paying for an abortion can be much, much harder than it should be. Many people don't realize that abortion care at Planned Parenthood isn't free. Even if insurance does cover it, sometimes patients are afraid to or don't want to have to explain to a parent or partner about the bill.

Some patients have to choose between their ability to choose and a month's rent, food and utility bills for their family. It's a catch-22, because he longer a woman waits, the more expensive the procedure is, and the smaller the window she has to get an appointment. Many folks have to travel out of state, where their medicaid doesn't even cover the medical expenses, let alone travel and lodging. he more hospitals and clinics that offer women access to abortion care, the better!

Donations to Vermont Access go straight to their fund so that they can give grants to your friends and neighbors who need the funding to be able to access their legal right to choose. VT Access is an all-volunteer run non-profit, with 99% of money donated going straight to grants (1% goes to mailing and printing costs). This is an organization that helps VT women, plain and simple.

Nobody wins when abortion is restricted. In places like El Salvador, where abortion is illegal in all cases, women are being convicted of murder after spontaneous miscarriages and sentenced to 30 year jail terms. When legal and safe access to abortion is limited, illegal and unsafe abortions occur.
