Re: “South Burlington Schools to Be Closed Friday After Repeated Threats

I hope that the past few days have brought many people new understanding of the terror, racism, and violence that underlie the Rebel moniker. From the verbal threats expressed by Dan Emmons to the written threats of *murder* of individual teachers and students delivered today and the resulting chaos and fear, the racism and hatred pervading this issue have been made clear. It is (long past) time for the citizens of South Burlington to stand up and reject the Rebel name and the racist history it represents.

Re: “Swale Release Powerful New Video, a Cover of Sinéad O'Connor's 'Black Boys on Mopeds'

Thank you to Swale for this acknowledgment of the tremendous joy, creativity, intelligence, love, and beauty embodied by each of these people so violently murdered by police. While their loss is most painful to their friends, family and communities, we are *all* the poorer for their lives cut short. As a white person, I call out to white people to stand up and take action against racism and violence: engage with candidates for local and statewide offices and vote; speak up about racism in our workplaces, families, schools and communities; read and educate ourselves; LISTEN to people of color and value their experiences and feelings; talk with our children about the harm racism does to all of us; make fighting against racism a commitment in our daily lives.

Re: “Financial Firm to Pay Vermont $5.95 Million in Jay Peak Case

So - accused of misappropriating 200 million dollars, they're going to repay less than 6 million?? What a deal.

Re: “Water Rights: Scullers vs. Motor Boats in Craftsbury

One would be hard-pressed to find a couple more dedicated to rural Vermont, community-building, fitness, and equal access than Judy Geer and Dick Dreissigacker. Their commitment to early childhood education, environmental stewardship, job creation, and community involvement is unparalleled.

Having grown up and then raised my own family in a small Vermont town, I have an understanding of, and deep respect for, local traditions. In my experience, Judy and Dick have this same respect. I strongly encourage local residents and the folks from COC to continue working together to find solutions to the challenges of sharing this beautiful Lake. I am confident that all of you, together, can create solutions that will better meet the needs of all of the lovers of Great Hosmer Lake.

Re: “Hate Crime Victim Fatuma Bulle Advocates for Refugee Women and Families

The strength and courage exhibited by Fatuma Bulle stand as an exemplary role model for all of us. Thank you to Kymelya Sari for this article - I hope each of the women described here finds a future that is safe, welcoming, and joyful. Your presence here graces us all.

Re: “Police Say Fentanyl Caused Recent Burlington Overdoses

Wow. Paco DeFrancis, these people *are* our kids - yours, mine, the community's. Every one of them was once someone's baby, and people gazed on them with love and hope and dreams. And each of these people has gifts still to offer us, if only we can treat their addiction as the disease it is, and treat them with the respect *every* person deserves.

There are no throw-away people. None.

Re: “Vermont Slam Poets Head to National Competition

So proud of these amazing young women! I was lucky enough to see them perform recently, and they are gifted, expressive, courageous, and joyful. I encourage folks to go see them perform, and to make a donation to support their trip to Washington, D.C. Muslim Girls Making Change - you rock!
