Born in New York City, Andrew Marks graduated from Middlebury College in 1966, but the education didn’t exactly prepare him for a vocation. After running through a series of varied part-time jobs, he met a working artist and it essentially changed his life. Long a pipe aficionado, Marks returned to Vermont and set about carving, from a stash of briar burl, beautiful and sophisticated smoking pipes — for 40 years. His reputation for these carefully crafted items is international. But eventually Marks began to pursue additional artistic outlets; the Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury is now exhibiting a selection of his “fantasy creatures.” Also made from burl, and mounted on stone, the small animals were inspired by the fetish carvings of the Zuni tribe, who believe that all things are imbued with spirit.
