Camel's Hump — We’re not exactly sure what Ira Allen was drinking — er, thinking — when he coined the term “Camel’s Rump” in reference to Vermont’s most distinctive peak in 1798. And, frankly, even the more sanitized Camel’s Hump, as the mountain became known in 1830, makes us question whether Allen had ever actually seen a camel. Though it really doesn’t resemble a camel, like, at all, the highest undeveloped Green Mountain peak — and third tallest mountain in the state overall — is among Vermont’s natural treasures. From the popular Huntington side, you can hike to the top and back by lunch. More adventurous climbers can take the longer, steeper route on the Duxbury side.
