Great collaboration! They are already doing this in other states. Massachusetts, for example, has at least 20 jail diversion programs in the state and many of these programs are clinician based models that have ride-along social workers out on the road with officers. Having been a clinical first responder, myself, for the Framingham Police Department (first jail diversion program in MA over 10 ten years ago), i can say that this program diverts a lot of mentally ill folks from the criminal justice system. I am a bit worried about these clinicians going to calls without any officers for safety reasons, having been in unsafe situations that did not initially seem dangerous, but i suppose they must have a protocol in place for potentially dangerous situations.
