Carmen Souza Show Canceled

This week's calendar section features a spotlight of singer-songwriter Carmen Souza, who was scheduled to perform at Burlington's FlynnSpace this Friday, January 14. According to a recent announcement on flynntix.org, though, "Carmen Souza's performance has been cancelled due to visa issues. We are contacting ticket holders and apologize for the cancellation."

Bummer.

Well, that makes one cancellation that's not due to today's snowstorm. Burlington's Fletcher Free Library just sent word that it's closing at 7 p.m. tonight (rather than 9 p.m.) and calling off all evening programs due to the weather, and tonight's Italian Converation Group at St. Michael's College has been canceled. It'd be best to call ahead on other events taking place today before you brave the blizzard.

What's SUP? It's short for standup paddleboarding, and it's been called the fastest-growing water sport in the world. Accessible to all ages and fitness levels, SUP is easy to learn and enjoy. In recent years, it's experienced a groundswell of popularity in Burlington, where Lake Champlain beckons all summer long. Get out on the water at the 10th annual Stand Up for the Lake, a benefit for the Community Sailing Center that includes a mile kids' race, three-mile recreational race and six-mile elite race. Or ride a wave of goodwill from the shore, where food and music make a splash.

Spring can be slow to arrive in Vermont: March and April often bring mud — or still more snow — instead of flowers. So the real sign of the season is when the Burlington Farmers Market moves outside. Though it's a popular indoor gathering spot during the chillier months, the bustling outdoor marketplace doubles as a weekly festival in the heart of downtown. In addition to 90-plus vendors of food, artisan crafts and other goods, it includes live musical entertainment and frequently inspires impromptu picnics and acro-yoga circles. Do as the locals do: Save Saturday morning for the market.
