Can you name the three branches of government or the five freedoms specified in the First Amendment? Do you know the Vermont state motto?
Answering all three correctly earns 15 points in Kids VT's Good Citizen Challenge, a summer civics project we created with support from the Vermont Community Foundation. Open to all Vermont K-12 students, the Challenge invites participants to choose from nearly 70 activities to earn points. Activities include visiting historic sites, learning about government and lending a hand to help neighbors.
Once they've accumulated 251 points — the number of towns in Vermont — participants send in their scorecards and evidence of their work to receive a Good Citizen medal and an invitation to the Statehouse in Montpelier, where they'll meet state officials and be recognized for their work. The first 100 students to complete the Challenge will also receive a Good Citizen T-shirt. The deadline to finish is October 9.
Kids VT has already received 13 completed scorecards, and our editors have spotted numerous Good Citizen participants posting about their adventures on social media, using the hashtag #GoodCitizenVT.
There's still time to take the Challenge! Find a scorecard in the center of this issue, download one from goodcitizenvt.com, or pick one up from our team of volunteers appearing at events throughout the summer; we'll also be handing out pocket-sized constitutions donated by Phoenix Books.
