Champlain Voices Record Project [SIV490]

5/12/17: The fourth and fifth graders at Champlain Elementary School in Burlington have been busy the past five months making a limited-edition record. This project all began with a field trip down the street to the Burlington Record Plant where students watched albums being pressed by Justin Crowther.

The fourth and fifth grade team polled the rest of their school to pick the songs to include, and they even wrote one original song. The students tackled all aspects of the project: promotion, graphic design, video documentation and managing donations.

Eva spent the afternoon with the energetic project leaders as they sang with music teacher Betsy Greene, visited the Burlington Record Plant to hear their new album and printed Champ, the Lake Monster, onto record sleeves with parent/volunteer Carin Lilly. Each family from Champlain Elementary School will receive one of the 400 student-produced records.

The Champlain Voices Record Project was recorded and pressed on Pine Street and their public record release party is down the same street at ArtsRiot on Thursday, May 25, from 4-5:30pm. There will be a limited number of records for sale at this event.

Workers have begun dismantling the old coal-fired power plant on the Burlington waterfront which closed down in 1986. The long-awaited redevelopment is removing the outer brick layer of the building and retaining the interior steel framework, the centerpiece of a new city park on a waterfront that was once devoted to industry.
