When film and theater fans think of Chicago, they may envision the 2002 movie starring Renée Zellweger or the long-running Broadway musical. In fact, the jazz-age story of Roxie Hart, a young wife on trial for murdering her older lover, first hit the silver screen in 1927. Based on a hit 1926 stage play, the silent film was thought to be lost, until 2006. Luckily for cinephiles, an original print turned up in the estate holdings of legendary director Cecil B. DeMille, who supervised the picture’s production. Local composer Jeff Rapsis provides a live score for a Brandon Town Hall silent film series screening.
