Re: “Entrepreneurship Community Planned for Cambrian Rise

John C. you are quite right, the only way to make a city viable is to have younger workers in better than minimum wage jobs to pay taxes and support initiatives for affordable housing. Unfortunately the basic economic tenet of having a tax base to support initiatives is lost on a lot of the posters. The average age of working Vermonters is getting higher and closer to retirement age so there are fewer and fewer younger people paying into the system. The complaints about things being for the rich may be right but not for the reasons that Mark M says. It is because of the spend, spend, spend mentality instead of seeing how to attract more higher paying jobs to support the economy in VT. You cannot have it both ways- it is pure economics 101.

Re: “Walters: Vermont Senate Fast-Tracks Budget Bill

Roy,
You complain about the under funding of the Teachers Retirement system - Why is it underfunded? It is because the democrat/liberal legislature has no fiscal responsibility. Why have they been raising taxes every year and coming up with all the expensive projects instead of trying to reign in spending. It was with the super majority it was occurring.
Shall we discuss how many 10s if not 100s of millions wasted on Shumlin's exchange program? It could have been done much more successfully with a lot less money but no it has been spend, spend, spend with the legislature.

Re: “Study Suggests Burlington's Union Station for Overnight Train Storage

This certainly shows the NIMBY mentality of the people in Burlington who are against anything to promote Burlington

Re: “Burlington Telecom Employees Face Benefits Reduction Under Schurz

Gi Grape, the local offer was the lowest of all the offers. The agreement made with Chase by the city to bail out the mess Kiss and Leopold left was such that Chase would have rejected the offer. All the locals whining about sticking it to Chase really shows what their integrity is, or in this case is not. Burlington got stuck by Kiss and Leopold so they wanted to ignore the agreement with Chase and stick them with the loss. Why the budgets are in such lousy shape and we keep having to pay more and more

I am sick of paying a lot of taxes and getting nothing in return so why don't I just not pay and tell the city to go away, too, bad, their taxes are not binding on me.

Chase may be the wrong entity but the point is the same.

North Old Ender- perhaps you should be thanking the council members who wanted to embarrass Miro and vote for their choice-Schurz at the last minute just to thumb their nose at Miro.

Re: “Walters: Team Scott Turns Up the Heat on Lawmakers

per Barbara's comment: "If he had some ideas about this, he should have proposed them earlier so that the legislature could do its job"

Perhaps the legislature should have done its job and come up with alternatives instead of waiting and wringing their hands....oh wait that might mean some voters might vote against them. Can't have that or have a more fiscally responsible legislature now can we?

Re: “Walters: Team Scott Turns Up the Heat on Lawmakers

The legislature knew this would be an issue from the start but did nothing to address the issue and now are upset that Scott is highlighting their fiscal irresponsibility.
The plan to bring the healthcare under the state's umbrella was a sound one and would have been a far better than the mess that the teacher's health plan is in now. There are times when local control is not the best choice and the legislators need to make the tough choice on this, not keeping the same old broken process
