Side Dishes: Leftover food news

Published June 30, 2010 at 9:53 a.m.

On Monday morning, the corner of Main and South Champlain streets in Burlington was a hive of activity. Several men were at work on the interior of what will be Spanish tapas restaurant Via Loma.

Though chef-owner Rob Minichiello was not present, two workers said he’s planning a July 15 opening.

Want to snag the “best breakfast” in Vermont, according to the hungry folks at the Food Network? Look no further than Penny Cluse Café in Burlington.

In a feature in the July/August issue of the network’s ’zine, the downtown hot spot is lauded for its eponymous breakfast item: biscuits and herbed gravy served with poached eggs and home fries.

Montpelier’s Hunger Mountain Coop, which recently underwent a significant expansion, is considering another one: a second branch. If feasibility studies pan out and member-owners agree, the co-op may create a second location in the building that currently houses RJ’s Friendly Market in Waterbury. RJ’s owner is considering retirement, Vermont Business Magazine reports.

Barring complications, the new store could be open by the end of the year.
