Come on, Sen. Leahy, why not just come out and say that he was lying? He WAS -- certainly in terms of his drinking behavior and what the references in his yearbook referred to, at a minimum. He had a history of throwing up because of a weak stomach? Give me a break! So ludicrous. Had he been honest and said he was a stupid teenager at the time, that drinking and partying and taking advantage of women were part of the culture during that time and most CERTAINLY the culture of over-privileged white male self-entitled prep school jocks, and that he regrets his behavior and sincerely apologizes for it, I just might be able to stomach his confirmation. As it is now, no way. Besides, given that he has clearly lied under oath, isn't that a felony that disqualifies him?
I don't see how this can be described as an "addition" to the existing place. It looks like an entirely new structure (which it should be). But whatever it is, does it have to cost this much!?? Maybe Robert Miller would cut a deal for the city like he did for the NNE community center.
I am so glad that women today feel empowered to speak out about these issues! I was a victim of a date rape (apparently drugged) but blamed myself, thinking "how stupid was I to go to this guy's place to get his help with a writing project??" This was in 1975; I was a sophomore in college and in South Carolina. I got pregnant from the assault (yes, it WAS his) and had an abortion, thank you, Roe v Wade. I never said anything to anyone about it, but I did drop out of the creative writing class so I would never have to see him again. Honestly, in that era, there was no other option.
Phil -- a great loss to Bernie, but kudos to you for all your tremendous work (!!)and your realization that it's time to move to family and personal relationships. After all you have given, it's time to give to yourself. I admire your commitment and perseverance over so many years. Thanks for all you have done to make us proud to be from Vermont and for advancing Bernie's agenda!
@Sebastien -- your comments are so right on! Thank you. Kids love playing dress up and having fun -- and no doubt that's all they saw or thought of (except for the stories being read to them) while there.
This is pathetic. Yet another case of human trafficking, exploitation and sexual abuse of a young woman by a male in a position of power/authority over her -- and no punishment! Sound familiar?? More than a little ironic that his lawyer describes him as someone who's "been of service to the community" when the only person he's been of service to is himself. This kind of "justice" ensures that McAllister's perverse attitude toward women will carry on to the next generation. Sickening.
THUMBS UP to Jensen and the awards committee members for their excellent choice!
