Re: “My Little Cupcake (Essex)

Bring on the butter!
I love eating these tiny little cupcakes and I love fun of all the different flavors! But I find myself wishing every time that they would boost the flavor a little bit. Sometimes there really isn't much flavor difference between one kind or another, unless the topping is significantly different. You can't really taste the butter in the buttercream - it comes off more like supermarket frosting - and I always find myself wanting the chocolate cakes to be more chocolatey, the vanilla more vanillay, the peanut butter to be much much much more peanut buttery. They end up tasting like lightly flavored sugar bombs. Not necessarily a bad thing. That said, I love the idea, they're a lot of fun, and my kids love to eat them. So we will still be customers even without our beloved butter. Food: 3 Ambiance: -1 Service: -1

Re: “A Divided South Burlington Tries to Unite With Two Separate Events

Black Lives Matter doesn't mean "Black lives matter MORE than anyone else's." It means "Black lives matter AS MUCH AS anyone else's." It's not anti-police, it's trying to underscore the cultural bias that many of us hold in this country that views black people as more dangerous, more threatening, and more expendable and results in their death. The movement is trying to correct that bias and save black people's lives.

The terms white fragility, white privilege, white dominance - those phrases are used to describe how racism, as a system, works, and how it hurts all of us, white people included. You can ignore the phrases, you can call them racist, but these things still exist in our culture whether you acknowledge them or not. The hurt and harm they cause is there whether you are willing to look at it or not. It's painful to talk about racism if you are white, and certainly easier to ignore it or pretend it doesn't exist (by calling these terms racist). But how good does ignoring it feel when your friends and neighbors are hurting?

And Ed, don't know where you're getting the "just moved to Vermont" piece of this. Many people involved have lived here their whole lives. Maybe it's because white Vermonters often assume people of color must be from somewhere else?

Re: “'Rebels' Yell: Protests Build Over South Burlington's Mascot Change

So much about this story makes me feel ill. That two people who no longer live here are sabotaging a local school budget with devastating consequences. That they really think that the white majority should get a "say" in whether or not something is racist. That the Rebel Alliance group swiftly and decisively blocked anyone who questioned whether racism was behind the allegiance to the Rebel moniker. That Dan Emmons actually said, "you're shitting in the wrong yard" - as if he were talking to a dog - to a high school student and young man of color. That Mr. Hines has taken so much abuse for advocating for this change. Racism is alive, well, and flourishing here in our green mountain state. We should all be ashamed.

Re: “South Burlington Man Arraigned in Rebels Stalking Case

This is beyond creepy and ridiculous, that a grown man is harrassing this student AND that so many alumni, many of whom no longer live here, are wreaking such havoc over this decision. I hope the South Burlington residents who have not been voting will step up to the polls next time and vote the budget through - and put an end to the destructiveness of the Rebel Alliance in this community.

Re: “About Time? New Overtime Rule Worries Vermont Employers

I wish this talked a little bit more about how so many employers illegally categorize their workers as exempt when they don't pass the test of "administrative, managerial, or professional" and how most of these workers have no idea that this is wrong. I was illegally classified as exempt for about 10-15 years of my career in the nonprofit sector, and my husband is illegally classified now, before this change, AND is required to work overtime. My understanding is that Obama made this rule change to address this common practice. It's not enough just to pay them $47k. The positions also have to pass the other tests.

Re: “Over Objections, Burlington School Board Approves Principal Hire

As an SA parent, I am thrilled to welcome Ms. Whitmore-Sells to our school. She's been a beloved administrator at her previous schools, she has a strong background in education, and I can't wait to see what SA will become under her leadership.

Re: “Rubi Simon Has a Vision for Burlington's Library

If only we could bring coffee in there. That would change everything.
