Re: “'A Vermont Romance' Makes Film History

Interestingly, the ending paragraph does come with an answer. Jerry Hunt continued to live and raise a family in Derby Line, with many family members still living in the Northeast Kingdom. - Don Hunt

Re: “Greek Out: UVM Frats, Sororities Protest New Property Taxes

In 1973 I became and remain a brother at Sigma Phi Society. In my case, our alumni association of brothers are considered caretaker/owners of the brick and mortar that exists at 420 College Street, a truly beautiful piece of architecture that was built by our fraternity in 1904 as a fraternity house. Our national charter dates back 190 years.

I believe there have been comments by Senator Tim Ashe and Mayor Miro Weinberger that compare these Greek organizations as competitors to the network of landlords. In fact, the fraternity and sororities house a diverse population of students who often rank among the achievers on campus and beyond; members of the Greek community learn and earn leadership skills first in their respective houses, carry them into leadership roles on campus and then beyond into their business and philanthropic lives.

This change in property tax law will serve a crushing blow to the UVM Greek system, causing most to sell to the exempt organizations, thus producing short-lived tax revenues to the city. This fails to meet my litmus test of common sense taxation. The Greek houses have a long tradition of doing good things on and off campus, often without any recognition from anyone other than other Greeks. I shudder to think these historic institutions will come to pass under the State Legislature's gavel.
