Re: “What I'm Watching: 'Gus Visser and His Singing Duck'

Thanks! I have the Edison and Treasures II and III sets, but not familiar with the others—I'll check them out.

Re: “What I'm Watching: 'Gus Visser and His Singing Duck'

Hi, Ethan. I really got a kick out of this! Believe it or not, Gus holds a regular spot in my rotation of films, as well. I watched it an embarrassing number of times. (Still can't make out those words at the end, though. And the accent sounds more Irish to me, despite his birthplace. Go figure.) I've been fascinated by this little curiosity ever since I saw a slice of it in the BBC Hollywood series years ago.

Fred Ott has a place in my iTunes library as well, along with any other silent or early sound oddity I've been able to find. The more it gives me a sense of a previous time, the better I like it. Two of my other favorite early soundies: The Will Hays Vitagraph Introduction (1926 - the antique oratory style is fascinating) and the Witt & Berg Vitaphone Short (also 1926). Have you seen these?

Once again, great writing!
