Love this story. I have a fig growing in my garden here in Calais, VT from a root cutting from my Grandma Turchi's garden in NJ. An "old Italian lady", she decided at the age of 90 she could no longer keep the garden. Hers was a fig she and my Grandpop tended for many years and it grew to over 8 feet tall. In October, it was loaded with tasty ripe fruit. My grandfather would bend the the plant over and cover it with old linoleum for the winter. My fig has stayed in the ground over winter, covered by compost. Though it bares fruit, it doesn't ripen enough to eat. The beauty for me is the memories of my wonderful grandparents in this fig that thrives even in Vermont. Ellie Stubbs, Calais,VT
