Re: “Vermont Sheriff Risks His Career by Hiring a Sex Offender

And to those who think Szad's fears of himself are proof that he's dangerous... I wholly disagree. The person who acts completely and permanently changed is likely hiding something. Often, the hidden urges are the most dangerous. By admitting a struggle, he allows room for support and help. It is a good thing, worthy of praise. It is a brave to be that vulnerable.
While I am saddened that conversion therapy is being used as a treatment (being gay is not wrong, and being straight doesn't make someone less likely to victimize children), I believe there is room for hope in this story, and an example of a humanitarian approach to be studied and perhaps used as an alternative strategy for reintegration.
Side note, out of context, that conversion therapist sounds like the worst. The idea that some sad, lonely woman is waiting for a converted gay sex offender is grotesque and not exactly the foundation for a healthy and meaningful marriage or relationship.

Re: “Vermont Sheriff Risks His Career by Hiring a Sex Offender

Mark Davis, thank you for writing such a complex article that humanizes the people involved. Many perpetrators of sexual violence are victims of sexual abuse. Unfortunately, Szad continued the cycle of pain by victimizing someone else. He is a risk to have in a community, but Marcoux demonstrates a higher level of justice and reasoning that is uncommon. I appreciate his approach of helping someone create a life of value that is earned back and not worth the risk of losing. It a significant and real problem that those who have served their time often have no place to go, no transportation, and little chance of being hired for a livable wage. And so many turn to substances and illegal acts, because little else is available. Why try, if you are set up to fail? Why become a better person, when the world doesn't acknowledge your efforts?
