Food & Wine's Dish

B-Town Hits The Bigtime

Burlington gets some ink in the June issue of Food & Wine magazine. The premise of "Food & Wine Across America," the first in a series of articles, is that "Major metropolitan areas like New York and San Francisco no longer have a monopoly on innovative chefs, food artisans, mixologists and other talents. Now these men and women are as likely to turn up in smaller cities . . ." Yep, like Burlington. And Providence, Rhode Island, and Portland, Maine, which are also covered in the story. But folks around here have known that for years, right?

Emily Kaiser, an up-and-coming food editor who visited Vermont during a sub-zero stretch this past winter, penned the part about our neck of the woods. Guess that's why neither Shelburne Farms nor the Intervale got a mention. It was cold. She did single out Hen of the Wood in Waterbury, as well as Burlington's L'Amante and family-friendly Viva Espresso. Other noteworthy stops on her tour included Lake Champlain Chocolates and City Market, where she discovered ice cream from Strafford Organic Creamery and other delicious local dairy products.
