Gotcha Covered

Local Matters

Independent congressional candidate and aerial photographer Jerry Trudell picketed Burlington Free Press headquarters Tuesday, complaining that his candidacy is being ignored by the state's largest daily. At times Trudell, who champions public transportation and renewable energy, walked in front of traffic on College Street to wave his sign and shout, "The people have a right to know!"

His action drew reporters from Channel 5, the Vermont Guardian and Seven Days.

But Free Press Executive Editor Mike Townsend questions whether Trudell is worth covering. He points out that the candidate didn't respond to the paper's request for a bio to put on its website, and notes that Trudell has never written a letter to the editor. He adds that, as far as he knows, Free Press reporters have not seen Trudell at any of the candidate debates. "I'm not sure I'd call that credible," he says. "If papers want to waste their time with this candidate, go ahead."

Burlington's Turning Point Center is a refuge for Vermonters who are trying to find their way out of drug dependence. In the stairwell leading to the center, a mural depicts a giant hand reaching down to a solitary slouching figure. Just outside the center's door at the top of the stairs, is another message: "You are no longer alone."
