Re: “Weinberger Raises $93,000 for Reelection Bid

Nice wrap up. Actually, I've spend more than a dime, but less than $100 so far, mainly on a postcard and some dry cleaning. But that's about to change. First ad tomorrow, and thanks for this financial update I sense that we can expect more beautiful color flyers from the $93,000 Man in all our mailboxes this month. Personally, I can't wait for the junk mail and all the lawn signs soon to line streets like billboards. At least they're just temporary. No lawn signs for me (sigh), no matter how much money I raise.

Re: “Liberal Activist Enters Mayoral Race

One clarification. I actually said Miro could be called the "Republicrat," but our phone connection wasn't the best. In Burlington the Republicrats emerged in the late 50s, when Dems and Republicans joined forces to control commissions and patronage. Mayor Gordon Paquette (71-81) was the leading Republicrat, a Democrat whom Republicans embraced and even chose not to oppose. Sounds familiar. The term was in wide use once, and based on Mayor Weinberger's approach and policies, might well be resurrected.

Re: “Burlington Progs to Pick Candidates Sunday

Concerning Bylaws requirements, it sounds like they may have changed, or else can be circumvented. In November 2011Mayor Bob Kiss decided not to seek a third term. In December, Sen. Tim Ashe, a former Progressive Councilor who hoped to run as a fusion candidate with the Democratic nomination, lost to Weinberger in a hotly contested caucus race. After deferring a decision for more than a month, local Progressives voted on January 22, 2012 not to field a candidate for mayor. About 30 people attended the caucus.
