Big Air

In 1922, Harris Hill was constructed in the middle of a cornfield in Brattleboro. This week, it’s home to the 93rd annual Harris Hill Ski Jump, an international competition that draws skiers from the U.S., Canada and Europe to New England’s only International Skiing Federation-approved jump. More than 40 competitors — including prospects for the 2018 Winter Olympics — whiz down a 90-meter track that facilitates speeds up to 60 mph. Once airborne, athletes travel more than 300 feet before touching down. As the only domestic stop on this year’s FIS Cup series to include women, the event provides a glimpse into the future of the sport.
