'Here We Are Here: Black Canadian Contemporary Art'

When: Through Sept. 16
Phone: 514-285-2000
When it comes to recognizing historic violence against indigenous populations — both generally and in terms of contemporary art — Canada is way ahead of the U.S. For example, Canada has a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Less visible, perhaps, is the country’s construction of blackness. Originally developed by the Royal Ontario Museum, this new exhibition at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts features works by 11 black Canadian artists — eight from the original show and three Montréal-based additions: Sandra Brewster, Michèle Pearson Clarke, Eddy Firmin, Chantal Gibson, Sylvia D. Hamilton, Bushra Junaid, Charmaine Lurch, Manuel Mathieu, Esmaa Mohamoud, Gordon Shadrach and Shanna Strauss. “The predominant discourse reduces the experience of [Black Canadians] to that of eternal immigrants or newcomers,” reads exhibition text. Borrowing its title from an interdisciplinary sound installation by Hamilton an artist and filmmaker from Nova Scotia, the exhibition seeks to counter and complicate that mainstream narrative.
