Re: “Burlington Pushes Anew for Gun-Control Charter Changes

It doesn't matter if a majority of people in Burlington want to violate people's rights. By such logic, segregation would still be alright in places where it was the will of the majority. Like it or not, the right to keep and bear arms is just that, a right. It is instrumental to the right of self defense. It's also egalitarian in that having a gun and proper training with it can help to neutralize the advantage that dangerous criminals would otherwise have over the rest of us; whether it be size, strength, ability, or being armed regardless of any laws people pass to create an illusion of safety.

Re: “Gunning for Reform: Burlington's Firearms Vote May Prove Largely Symbolic

The spokespeople for gun control talk about "solutions" here but solutions to what exactly? We live in a state where the majority of gun-related fatalities are suicides! Vermont is one of only a handful of states which do not violate the right to keep and bear arms. We are also one of the safest states in the Union, even amidst drug problems and poverty. If we follow the logic of gun control leaders, the opposite should be true and it isn't.

There will always be bad people and bad people can usually find a weapon, whether it be grandpa's shotgun or the carving knife from their kitchen. Laws like this aren't going to change that. This is a fact we need to accept. We also need to accept the fact that these laws absolutely do infringe upon the rights of law-abiding citizens who do see their margin of safety diminished by gun control. Remember that whether it's a home-invader pressing his way into your living room or a rabid coyote bearing down on your child outside, the time that matters could be long gone before the phone even rings.

When it comes to diminishing rights, gun control groups love using words like "sense" and "reasonable". Given what I just explained, we should be highly skeptical when they do. We also know that there are many in the gun control movement who would love to see all guns abolished and our rights trampled forever. These people know that such a bold measure could never pass. So as several famous gun control advocates have acknowledged, they need to advance one deceptive inch at a time. Laws like the ones in question here are exactly those kinds of inches.
