Re: “Burlington School Officials Seek to Quell Censorship Controversy

My reference to "The above comment" is obviated by the placement of my comment. I was referring to "Young Grandma's" comments about race.

Re: “Burlington School Officials Seek to Quell Censorship Controversy

It is true that race is always involved in everything in America, but I disagree with the above comment completely. First of all, seeking diversity is not "affirmative action". It is seeking diversity, which in Burlington is overdue, Secondly, the only superintendent I thought did a really great job in the 40 years I have lived in Burlington was Paul Danyow. All the others were also white. Thirdly, three white school employees can and have done worse. ( I actually had no idea the principal was African American until I saw his picture yesterday)
We can criticize bad behavior without having to bring race into it, although in some ways I thank you for writing what you did because I am sure a lot of people were thinking it, so best to discuss it.
To get back to the main point. The school board and the administration have lost their way and the public knows it. It's why all but one school board member up for reelection last March lost. The system needs to be rehabed. Scores need to go up and we need to focus less on bureaucracy and more or morale and results!
And before we vote on $70 million dollars we need to have confidence in the people who are going to spend it.

Re: “Burlington School District Places Embattled Counselor on Leave

Athough I'm outraged by the whole mess, I do have to defend paid leave. Until this is adjudicated, you can't fire him. Paid leave is the right tool to get him out of the school asap without violating due process.

Re: “Burlington School District Places Embattled Counselor on Leave

I feel like this is an altrnate universe. The reluctant school administration is shamed into putting someone on leave who is charged by the state of Vermont with sexual harassment and dishonesty. Their next response: censor the school newspaper which blew their cover up. And they choose this moment to ask is to trust them with 70 million dollars. If the school board doesnt get rid of these folks we need to get rid of the half of the board we didnt get rid of last March. This is truly awful and incredibly inept.

Re: “Residents Rebuke Burlington School Officials Over Guidance Department Controversies

Ok now what about dealing with the underlying mess. A State investigator has found serious deficiencies and alleged sexual harassment at BHS. While important, fixing the press issue does not fix what appears to be a cover up by the school administration.

Re: “Censorship of Burlington School Newspaper May Have Violated Law

The school system is a real problem. Scores have plummeted, teacher morale is low. The Administration and the Board misled the public about the uses of the 19 million bond issue we passed a few years ago. And now the mess over the faked transcript and sexual harassment charges which it appears the administration tried to cover up. Before we add more money we need to make changes. Howard Dean
