One rail car carries as much as 385 semi trailers. We need to get these trucks off the road in Vermont! Do your part, Shelburne!

Re: “Vermonters Rally Against Antiobiotic Overuse on Farms

Sub-therapeutic antibiotic use is controversial and it should be examined, but there are a number of misconceptions here. They are not given to prevent illness or (often mentioned but not in this article) to mitigate "unsanitary living conditions". They are sub-therapeutic; that means that they are used at a level too low to treat or prevent disease. They are used to make animals grow faster or to increase the efficiency of converting feed to growth. The author then goes on to describe the problem of animals in Vermont and elsewhere going to slaughter with antibiotic residues; a significant issue but unrelated to sub-therapeutic use. Feeding sub-therapeutic antibiotics is already illegal in dairy animals so this is not an issue for our dairy farms. I can assure you, animals in the green mountain state are not raised "pumped full of chemicals". Antibiotics are valuable for treating disease and reducing suffering in sick livestock just as they are for dogs, cats and people. Please don't paint them with a broad brush and tie the hands of responsible farmers and veterinarians. See also:
