Re: “Vermont Sheriff Risks His Career by Hiring a Sex Offender

Thank you, Mark Davis, for telling this story. Thank you, Sheriff Marcoux, for treating a fellow human being with dignity, empathy, and trust. Thank you, Timothy Szad, for sharing your story with honesty. Sex offender laws in this country are a travesty. Our legal system sees sex offenders, especially those whose offenses involve children, in black and white -- any sexual misconduct or deviant behavior and you are forever considered nothing other than a heinous monster who should be castrated, killed, or permanently locked up. But of course nothing involving humans is black and white. We--voting citizens who have the responsibility to work toward a better society, and hold our political representatives accountable for writing laws that will make for a fair and safe society--need to hear more stories like this. We need to see that every person labeled "sex offender" is more than just the offense they committed. We also need to see that the blanket term "sex offense" is horribly inadequate to understand the diversity of acts that bear that label. The more we can see stories like this, the more we can see "sex offenders" as fully dimensional people, the more we can see the shades of gray in this broad category of "sex offenses"...the closer we can come to a society that is safe for children and respects the basic human rights of all citizens. Please, tell your representatives that you want evidence-based and rational laws that actually protect children. Rather than destroying lives and families over a single mistake, we need laws that rehabilitate sex offenders and enable them to reintegrate safely into society.
