Re: “Birding Is Not Your Grandpa's Pastime Anymore

And BTW, older birders have been avid users of phone APs for as long as they've been around. We are often the ones who introduce them to new birders.

Re: “Birding Is Not Your Grandpa's Pastime Anymore

1. There is a birding code of ethics. It should be followed, especially regarding sound files on APs. http://www.aba.org/about/ethics.html
2. Birding is actually an intergenerational activity. That is one of the best things about it in a culture that segregates us off from each other by age.
3. You can't learn everything from a book or Ap. Mentoring from humans is essential to becoming a decent birder. And it's more fun to learn together. Attention to bird behavior that goes beyond listing is also important. The birds are our teachers.
4. Bird watching teaches us what birds and other creatures need for their well being, and consequently for our own happiness. They are amazingly precious gifts.
