Re: “Vermont State Workers in Springfield 'Do Not Feel Safe' After Bomb Threats

Corrections Commissioner Mike Touchette, whose department oversees the states probation and parole program, said he hadnt heard about employee concerns until he was contacted by Seven Days Tuesday morning. That's a problem right there.

Re: “Walters: GOP Lawmakers Claim 'New Wind Blowing' in Vermont Statehouse

I think it reflects an absence of pitbull Jason Gibbs. He's been scarcer than Mitch McConnell lately.

Re: “Vermont Lawmakers Question Untreated Inmates and Unspent Money

Al Gobeille should mandate a department-wide audit of AHS's contracts, including DOC's. If he doesn't the Legislature should. There should be no more surprises like this one and like the earlier (and perhaps current) Vermont Health Connect contracts. My experience in negotiating and managing multi-million dollar contracts for the state is that the contract is only as good as the staff who are charged with contracting. Although Bulletin 3.5 (state contracting guidelines) are quite specific, they are not followed. Contracting can and should be tightened up, with requirements (for example) to spend X% of the money or return it to the state. This is very easy to do. No, the contractors' lawyers won't like it but that's why we have AG's. Another weak contracting area is performance guarantees and financial penalties. We always put these in but I'm amazed to find how many AHS contracts don't have them. Perhaps Doug Hoffer's office can review the AHS contracts for conformance to Bulletin 3.5. If there is a variation that can be explained, the opportunity will be there. Otherwise Vermont taxpayers money deserves to be well spent without sloppy contracting.

Re: “Pay Raises for UVM Medical Center Administrators Anger Nurses

I will go to Dartmouth in the future just because of the arrogance of UVMC.

Re: “Media Note: WCAX to Cut Production Staff

"Ultimately, there will be some jobs that are separated," he said. Corporate jargon for being separated from your paycheck. At least call it what it is - layoffs.

Re: “Walters: Vermont GOP House Candidate Goes Independent

I can understand why people would not want to be linked to the current Republican administration; I wouldn't either. Having been both a Republican in earlier years, and a Democrat in later years, I am now an Independent. I'm looking for a new party of Moderates. This would replace the older Dems and GOPs who could and did reach across the aisle for the good of the whole, and who were able to use common sense, moderation and civility, working together for the greater good. As I recall these people actually did represent their constituencies - imagine that. Of course that was before "Corporations Are People". There is a lot to be said for reforming the current laws to bring the country back to a manageable level. The strangest thing is that neither party wants to do so. As Simon and Garfunkel once said, "A man hears what he wants to hear, and disregards the rest".

Re: “Professional Fundraisers Keep a Large Cut of the Cash They Bring In for Nonprofits

I stopped giving to the Professional Firefighters years ago when I found how little of my money actually went to the firefighters.
