Blurring the Lines

Familiar with ghazal? After listening to Kiran Ahluwalia perform, you'll remember it well. The Juno Award-winning singer lends her voice to these South Asian poetic wanderings inspired by illicit love, along with a selection of Punjabi folk songs. Traditional Indian and Pakistani rhythms take a modern turn, thanks in part to jazz guitarist Rez Abbasi, whose accompaniment allows Ahluwalia to transcend musical and cultural boundaries. This hybrid of genres powers her recent release Sanata, a mix of Indian, jazz and Saharan sounds, and makes for live shows the Village Voice calls "reliably gorgeous."
