The story of “Layla and Majnun” is one of unrequited love. Adopted by Muslim, Sufi and Hindu storytellers over the centuries, the narrative has inspired poems, paintings, plays and a 1908 opera by composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli. Mark Morris Dance Group and Silk Road Ensemble with singers Alim Qasimov and Fargana Qasimova bring the chamber opera — considered to be the first of its kind in the Muslim world — to life with a fusion of Eastern and Western instruments. A bold backdrop and 16 dancers make this interpretation a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.
