“The exquisite corpse shall drink the new wine”: This is the namesake phrase of the surrealist improvisational game of Exquisite Corpse. For Castleton University professor emeritus Bill Ramage, the collaborative exercise has become a way to reflect on current politics and imagine the future. In an installation at Burlington’s Flynndog, facilitated by ArtShape Mammoth, Ramage weaves together several threads for a surprisingly fertile, if odd, meditation on fragmentation, destruction, collective creativity and alternative structures of thought. Based on his memory of playing Exquisite Corpse during the 1970 Kent State riots, Ramage invited nine other artists to play with him now, in the wake of Trump’s election. Using chalk and tape, they used their drawings as blueprints for larger, site-specific works. Beneath the first four lines of William Butler Yeats’ poem “The Second Coming,” the collective abstractions serve as Ramage’s invitation to discover ways to “drink new wine.”
