A modern opera set in ancient Egypt has a Vermont connection: Middlebury College Pardon Tillinghast Professor of Religion Shalom Goldman coauthored the libretto and wrote the vocal texts for Philip Glass’ opera Akhnaten. First staged in 1984, the work is based on the life and rule of the titular leader who was crowned pharaoh at age 17 and is said to have introduced monotheism in ancient Egypt. Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo stars as the young king in a Metropolitan Opera production, performed in New York City and broadcast live to more than 2,200 theaters around the world, including venues in Middlebury and Hanover, N.H.
