The article assures us that "Despite all the ink spilled over the state's supposedly high tax burden, Vermont's effective tax rate is roughly average" according to a study by a left-leaning think tank, setting us up to agree with Senate President Ashe later intimating that we should solve poverty in Vermont by a tax-based transfer of wealth from those who have to those who don't. I think most Vermonters would rather their politicians figure out how to get them a good job rather than a handout. And most peoples experience living in Vermont tells them that taxes are NOT average. The personal finance website Wallethub calculates that Vermont ties Maine in having the 3rd highest taxes in the nation when you measure taxes as a percentage of total personal income in the state (

A tempting fantasy considering the current direction of the federal government. Reality hits when you consider that Vermont receives from the Federal government an amount equivalent to 33.6% of the general fund revenues ( Oh, but we get to keep the taxes that we pay to the Feds so we're better off? Less than 15% of private sector workers have defined benefit plans. Why should teachers have a better plan than the taxpayers who struggle to pay the taxes needed to fund one of the highest cost per pupil education systems in the country?
