Conrad "Gil" Gilbert
  • Conrad "Gil" Gilbert

Conrad "Gil" Gilbert, 81, died peacefully at home in Burlington on Friday, Oct. 31, 2014, with his wife and family by his side. Gil was born in Berlin, N.H., on May 5, 1933, to Yvonne and Joseph Gilbert. He married Cecile "Sue" Routhier, in Berlin, in July 1955. At the time of his death, they were in their 60th year of marriage. Together they had six children and lived in Berlin, N.H., before moving to Burlington in 1966. Gil worked at General Electric until 1969, when he began a long career with Hazelett Strip-Casting Corporation in Colchester, retiring in 1996. In retirement, he also enjoyed a part-time driving position with Berlin City in Williston. Gil loved planning and embarking on travel excursions with Sue and together they enjoyed many trips. Gil's free time also included fishing, hunting, cribbage, and most of all spending time with family. Gil was a member of the St. Joseph's Parish community for many years and his faith shaped his spirit as a very gracious and loving husband, father, friend and neighbor. Gil was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, David. He is survived by his wife, Sue; and his children and their spouses, Dan and Trudy Gilbert of Georgia, Michel and Theresa Luca Gilbert of Huntington, Mark Gilbert and Theresa Fortner of Colchester, Jackie and Michael Pierce of Hartland, and Dawn and Steve Terrill of Colchester; sister, Rachel Delisle of Berlin, N.H.; and sisters-in-law, Jean Cormier and Irene Montminy of Burlington. Also very special to him are 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Gil's life will be held with a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. in St. Joseph's Co-Cathedral, 29 Allen St., in Burlington. ElmwoodMeunier, 97 Elmwood Ave., is in charge. Giving back was so important to Gil. Gifts in his memory may be made to his son's work in Haiti through Northern Friends of Haiti, online at www.nfoh.org, or by mail to 268 Rudgate Road, Colchester, VT 05446; or to the Visiting Nurse Association, 1110 Prim Rd., Colchester, VT 05446.
