Obituary: Marilyn Sturgeon Barney

Marilyn Sturgeon Barney, age 66 years, died peacefully Wednesday evening September 18, 2013, in the Northwestern Medical Center with loving family at her side.

Born in St. Albans on October 7, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Elizabeth (Revoir) Sturgeon. She was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy-St. Albans and on November 15, 1969, was married to Kermit Barney who predeceased her on September 30, 2003, following 34 years of marriage.

For 30 years Marilyn was employed by the IBM Corporation of Essex Junction retiring in 1995. For the past 14 years Marilyn has served as librarian for the Swanton Public Library.

Marilyn was very artistic and following her retirement from IBM began painting. She also enjoyed reading, cross word puzzles, was a member of the library knitting group and loved all animals.

She leaves her two devoted children, Karen Nye of Milton and Kevin Barney of Swanton; her brother Gary Sturgeon and his wife Theresa of Highgate; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Darla Blondo of Swanton, Cheryl Messier of Highgate Springs, Vance and Peggy Barney of Swanton and Randy Barney of New York as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday September 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. Father Emmanuel I. Ajanma will be the celebrant and homilist. All relatives and friends are invited to attend. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Barney family lot in Riverside Cemetery.

There will be no public calling hours.

Gifts in Marilyn's memory may be made to the Franklin County Humane Society, 30 Sunset Meadows, St. Albans 05478 or to Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 06588.
