One More Taxi Story

The last, maybe. At least for now.

Earlier today, I received an email from Duncan Adamson of South Burlington. One summer afternoon last July, Adamson and his wife took a CCTA bus into downtown Burlington. Then, after a night on the town, they tried to hail a cab at taxi stand near City Hall Park.

No luck. None of the cabbies would pick him up, Adamson claims. Why? 'Cause none of them, one driver later told him, wanted to have an empty car on the way back to town after dropping Adamson off in South Burlington.

On July 23, Adamson wrote an email to a bunch of city administrators explaining what happened. "I don't think this is an isolated incident," he wrote. "Is there a rule covering this?  Do you agree this is a problem?"

On August 1, Councilor Clarence Davis (P-Ward 3), chair of the council's license committee, wrote back. "I am a little shocked to hear of the treatment that you received from the various taxi drivers that you attempted to engage," Davis replied. He told Adamson he would forward the complaint to Burlington Airport officials.

Almost a year later, Adamson says he still hasn't received any follow-up calls or emails. (Photo: Jordan Silverman)
