Had a great time last night as we stumbled in to NECI on Main, not entirely sure what to expect! We meant to come to dinner on Tuesday for their Earth Day prix fixe menu, but kids changed our schedule on that and so date night moved to Thursday. We had a delicious cocktail (mojito) down in the lounge with David who was delightful, but what really caught our eye was the salsa dancing lessons! They had only begun and, since it was only $5 for the hour instruction, we said 'what the heck' and kicked off our shoes. Juliana was a great instructor (and a NECI student!) and we stayed in the lounge for well over an hour before our stomachs forced us off the dance floor.
Having worked up a solid appetite, we ordered with gusto! The goat cheese gallette was INCREDIBLE, nice, light, warm, crispy...a great balance to the beef in the fried empanadas and the superb mole sauce. Initially, I thought I would just have a trusty burger, but I forged ahead once I saw the duck entree: marinated in ginger and jasmine with spring pea risotto and a delicious carrot sauce. If you love duck, this will not disappoint. My wife had the excellent corriander-rubbed mahi mahi....light, very well prepared, supersupersuper. We capped it off with the 'dessert sushi,' which was another great adventure, but I'll let you discover this treat for yourself.
In short, we had the best date night, not because we had expectations but because we let ourselves be surprised! The staff we all very attentive and accommodating without hovering, the food was excellent (full disclosure, we did have the mahi mahi sent back for a little extra time on the grill. Our server didn't bat an eyelash, simply solved the problem and when it came back freshly plated, it looked better than ever). We are coming back for it all and look forward to many more evening with these pleasant surprises!
