Re: “That's Budget: Seven Takeaways From Shumlin's New Agenda

As a state we are broke. As a country we are broke. The government programs that we have built cannot be supported--it cannot be all things to all people nor solve every problem that we have. Choices and sacrifice will need to be made. Neither the Vermont Legislature or the Gov. will face the fact that the fall in tax revenue means the economy is faltering. Still both branches of government promise more programs and services along with all kinds of taxes. They lie about the "recovery." I wonder when they will pass a law taking paychecks, income and property of anyone with a net worth over $150,000 USD. Even this would not solve all the issues we face. Will none of our leaders be honest about the problems we face?

What you tax you destroy and a payroll tax will eventually kill job creation in this state that we very badly need. Everyone supports tobacco taxes because they change behavior and make it more expensive to smoke. So why does everyone think that a payroll tax will not make job creation more expensive? $117 million deficit--that is only if you do not include the pension gap. So where are the cuts in education, social services, pension benefits and state employees? There are none because this political class is dependent on buying votes in exchange for services. We are "rich" enough to provide food clothing shelter and education to everyone, but not without some hard choices being made and radical reform in our institutions. (Republicans and Obama supporters need to stop supporting all these wars and military expenses.)

Our "leaders" are going to kick the can down the road until a collapse happens. Then the poor, children, vets and all of us will pay a very large price.
