Re: “Tapping Into the Adirondacks' Growing Craft Beer Market

The following is an excerpt from a letter that appeared in the June 27th Plattsburgh Press Republican. Clearly we do not think Prom Night Cherry is a "fun and creative brew."

We’re disappointed by owner Jessy Jolicouer’s decision to name one of Oval Craft’s beers Prom Night Cherry.
Although a June 5 article in the Press-Republican referred to this beer as Prom Night, the full name as shown on Oval Craft’s website is Prom Night Cherry, described as “a blonde ale with hints of cherry” that’s “a great introduction beer for the non-craft beer drinker.” The label depicts a pair of women’s legs wearing a man’s top hat.
The innuendo of the name and label (i.e. when a girl has intercourse for the first time, she “pops her cherry;” prom night is often depicted in popular culture as an opportunity for sex) paired with the description of the beer as light and easy to consume, would seem to suggest that craft-brew “virgins” will enjoy this beer.
But we strongly object to marketing an alcoholic product that makes a joke out of the overt sexualization of teenage girls and the problem of underage drinking, particularly by linking both of these things to prom night.
Local high school students, teachers and parents work hard all year to ensure that prom night is an enjoyable and safe evening for all its participants.
Prom Night Cherry undermines those efforts by making light of sex and drinking during prom and ignoring the role that binge drinking often plays in sexual assault, drunk driving and other violence and injury, especially among teenagers and young adults.
We respectfully ask that the name be changed.
