Re: “Leahy, Sanders Vote Against Deal to Reopen Federal Government

Once again Bernie gets spanked. His heart is in the right place, but he is not great at knowing how to win because he never really learned how to win - a consequence of his big government/socialist beliefs. In this case, DACA was/is supported by almost everyone, but instead of playing it out to win, he tried to outfox Trump by linking DACA to the US budget talks. Fail. What Bernie needs to do is focus on individual issues, one at a time, and stop these silly attempts at horse trading of issues...Bernie is not really good at that. Too bad, I like Bernie, but....

Re: “Walters: Trump Tax Changes Stump Vermont Analysts

Why are these folks so clueless? The bill will harm Vermonters long term because 1) deduction of prop tax and state income tax is limited to 10k, thereby driving down property values and thus income to the state; 2) no more home equity loan deduction which will reduce real estate investment and thus state income; 3) caps loan write off to $750k which will drive down property values of expensive properties, thus reducing income to the state. Vermont was barely getting by under this BOOMING economy, and most smart kids never come back. The state desperately needs jobs, lots of them. Sad.

Re: “Walters: Trump Tax Changes Stump Vermont Analysts

Folks, the new federal tax bill is a long term downside for Vermonters, why cannot anyone be fiscally honest here? The new tax code caps the sum of property tax and state tax deduction to 10k, which will drive down property values and increase rent, thereby driving down property tax income. It also eliminates deduction of home equity loans which will reduce home improvement construction and thus reduce tax income. It also reduces second home write off of interest to loans above $750k, which will drive down home value (and thus tax revenue) of super expensive Vermont properties. While the rest of the American economy is booming, Vermont is barely staying afloat. The Vermont legislature is doing Vermonters a tremendous disservice by not being honest. What Vermont needs is jobs, lots of them. Sadly we do not have the leadership in Vermont to bring in new jobs. Sad.

Re: “Backstory: Stopped at the Border

In my experience, border agents randomly search cars, both Canadian Border and Mexican. I for one am glad they take their job to help protect us seriously, so long as they are courteous and professional about it. Judging by their questions I assume they are trained to more often search those that present greater risk, another good thing.

Re: “Saint Michael's Basketball Players Take a Knee Before UVM Game

Ask for White Privilege that's mostly just plain BS. Sure, people grow up with different levels of opportunity and Yes some minority communities have struggled. And Yes I grew up with a family in which I was taught to work hard. And yes I was privileged to have a dad who continued to work while he was dying of cancer the last five years of his live simply so he could show his family how much he loved them. But that wasn't White Privilege that was simply privilege. Any man of any color or gender could do the same if they so choose. Color or gender does not limit you to do these kinds of things. And yes I have a good paying job. I also busted my ass off and work night and day and pay my way through college and graduate school to succeed. That wasn't privilege that was hard work. It's high time all these whiners got off their butts and simply figured it out instead of crying and whining as if they are living some horrific life. Fact is you all have opportunities and luck and bad luck at different points in your life, it's up to you to own it and make a difference it has nothing to do with privilege. It has to do with hard work goodness and respect for others. And above all respect for our country. That's opportunity is a privilege all of us have. So get off your butt and work hard. But please, don't whine.

Re: “Saint Michael's Basketball Players Take a Knee Before UVM Game

By taking a knee, you're disrespecting the very people who gave their lives in order for you to be able to take a knee in the first place. That's why taking a knee during our national anthem is so wrong. Our national anthem is the one moment in our lives in which we all set aside our differences and recognize the wonderful opportunity we have to be Americans.

There are and always will be issues in which people are marginalized in our society. There will always be reasons to protest this or that. Yes there are instances in which people of color have been marginalized by others in racist ways, and we should always work hard to change that. There are also instances where incredible Brave cops have been killed by others in their line of duty protecting us from bad people. Those cops should also be admired and protected. Yet, you don't see them taking a knee!

Re: “With Teacher Contracts in Play, 'Comparables' Are Under Scrutiny

In terms of salary, it seems folks ought to be including retirement compensation in this discussion because for a 30 year employee, retirement will be ~42% of their last 3 years of salary, so for a 30 year employee retiring at $89k, they would receive an additional 30 year income of ~$35k per year. And average annual cash benefit will approximately be $89k + $35k.

Along these same lines, a 3% is actually a net 5% raise when one include retirement.

This post is not to pick a side though I personally think there are far better ways to resolve disputes than striking against the kids. Our kids deserve better than this.
