Stuck in Vermont: Tea in the Tulips with Emily of von Trapp Flowers

Episode 567

Emily von Trapp grew up nurturing a love for flowers at her parents’ operation, the von Trapp Greenhouse in Waitsfield. During the colder months, the business used to hibernate - until Emily found a way to bring flowers to life in the dead of winter. In October, Emily planted 70,000 tulip bulbs with the help of her family and friends at an event that they call Tulipalooza. Known to some as the “Tulip Queen” or the “Flower Fairy,” she sells her colorful varieties at markets in Central Vermont and also offers a von Trapp Flowers CSA.

We visited Emily and some of her pals and CSA members to enjoy tulips and tea on a winter afternoon in a warm greenhouse bursting with blooms.

You can meet Emily and her tulips at the Vermont Flower Show this weekend at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction and you can follow her on Instagram @vontrappflowers.
