State of the Arts

If you’ve got a cellphone with a camera — and who doesn’t these days? — you may want to know about a nifty show coming up at Stowe’s Helen Day Art Center this fall. In fact, you may want to participate. Exhibitions Director Odin Cathcart has just issued a call to artists for “The Relentless Eye: Global Cell Phone Photography,” a first-of-its-kind show of, yes, images caught on the cell. Cathcart says he’s seeking entries — up to 10 per person — that “reveal the creative mind.” So maybe that shot of your pup catching a Frisbee, or your baby smeared with oatmeal, won’t make the aesthetic grade. But that will be up to guest judge Eirik Johnson — a Boston-based photographer with an extra “i” in his name and a damn good eye for images.

Cathcart explains that the exhibit aims to exploit two aspects of digital cellphone photography: its ubiquity — that is, how universal access to the technology has changed the medium — and its limits and possibilities. If these explorations sound intriguing, click here to check out submission info ; the deadline is August 30. And stay tuned for the show, which opens September 25.
